#Hashtags

Time to talk #Hashtags

Hashtags can be a very useful tool in your social media strategy, but only if they're used correctly.

Hashtags are a fun way to engage people in your product or service.

How do they work?

Hashtags were originally introduced to help bring order to social media by organising and grouping together topics, making it easier for someone to find content that matters to them. Once published, it becomes a clickable and searchable link.

Take the tv show, The Apprentice, as an example.

Using #TheApprentice and #iPlayer, anyone can click on these and the tv programme or others that may be of interest on the BBC.

Top tips:

  • Only use hashtags that are relevant to your product or service

  • Use specific hashtags rather than generic ones (for example #newcar rather than #new or #car

  • Try and use slightly lesser known ones to reduce the competition

  • Hashtag your own brand

  • Always use capital letters to distinguish the words
