Attention Please!

Are you wondering why your social media posts are not getting enough attention?

There could be a number of reasons for this.

It could be that your posts are not relevant for your target audience, maybe you’re posting at the wrong time or day, or simply not posting consistently/often enough.

The first thing to do is check your analytics/insights – these will help you determine which posts are hitting the mark and which are falling by the wayside. Remember that interaction is not limited to post likes & comments - it includes page follows, link clicks and video plays.

The next thing is to understand how the algorithm works – this can be a little tricky and daunting at first, but it’s not that difficult to navigate once you know how.

Basically, the algorithm decides who sees your posts and how often. It does this by identifying which content is engaging enough and relevant for people to see. Post likes and page follows do help with this, but ultimately the algorithm will determine which audience it decides is best suited for your business, and will subsequently place posts directly on these feeds.

You need to learn to work with the algorithm and guide it to your desired audience.

Ensure your content is completely relevant to your business – don’t rely on ‘National Days’ or cute puppy pictures (unless of course you’re running a doggy day care!), although these can be useful to break up your feed. Concentrate on what your customer base needs to know – what you do, when you do it, how much you charge, delivery times, opening hours, contact details. Make it entertaining with good use of keywords, emojis and hashtags, and use a good quality image that reflects your business offering.

Use your analytics to decide which days and times are best for your target audience.

Don’t be afraid to spend some money on sponsored adverts – these can work wonders to boost your brand and profile.

When advertising, please make sure you select the right demographic, especially in terms of location.

Finally, don’t rely too much on page follows and likes – quality over quantity is key.

For example, if your business is very localised, your well-meaning Aunt 200 miles away is not going to help by liking, commenting or sharing your posts – all the algorithm will see is someone interacting with your profile, and will continue to show your content to her and not the people you’re trying to encourage.

If your content is ‘good enough’ for the algorithm, it will do the hard work for you in ensuring your posts reach the right people – regardless of whether or not they follow your page – yet!
